In Every generation in recent history, our country has endured war. Many men and women die every single year in combat for our country. In churches, schools, and around our communities we see pictures of those who died for our freedom. Often the faces are very young. It is a sad reality, and these people are heroes. Thank God people are willing to risk their lives for the people and the country they love. They are willing so their children will have a good life, a free life. Many will do it because they have a deep understanding of what this country has done for them.
In this chapter Jesus is described as someone who would die for sinners. Essentially we were God’s enemies and He was willing to die for us. It is the equivalent of a soldier dying for the opposing country. That is an interesting thought, isn’t it? As a disobedient sinner we bring nothing good to the table. We are tainted and sinfully nasty before God.
God doesn’t need us. He simply looks at us and sees we need help. Read these verses again:
“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die – but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:6-8).”
In our unlovable state we are trying to live our own lives. We are trying to live life apart from God. The idea that God would love us even then is unbelievable. Yes, we can be redeemed and transformed, but God’s love is not about what is in it for Him. God’s love is amazing. Jesus gave His life for us, His enemies. Are we willing to do the same?

Great message! This line really sticks out to me: God doesn’t need our help. He simply looks at us and sees we need help. That is a profound truth. Romans 5:8 is one of my favorites, captures so much about the gospel.

Thank you Melissa, that means a lot. It is a profound verse. Most people don’t think of themselves as God’s enemy, but that is the starting point.
